Best Time to Go

When we think of Middle Eastern Countries, we think of the summer months as a no-go but to my surprise, most of the places in Abu Dhabi are indoors which makes it an all year round destination.

If you are looking into spending days on the beach, consider on checking the weather forecast for windspeed during the months of December and January. My visit was during the end of December and early January, the sun was shining but the windspeed was 50km/h so the beaches were closed.

Before Arriving to Abu Dhabi

• Register for Arrivals with your vaccine information on the ICA website
• For UAE Visa – I have written an article on how to apply for your visa with my personal experience here
• Download Al Hosn App from App Store or Google Play Store – This is needed to enter any location in UAE

Upon Arrival in Abu Dhabi Airport

• PCR test will be conducted prior to immigration queue
• Ask the immigration officer for your UID number which will be used to log in to your Al Hosn App. My UID did not work and I was not able to log in but I used the Saudi version of the app called Tawakkalna that is also recognized in UAE.
• Quarantine is not required for anyone visiting Abu Dhabi

How to get around

I would recommend to rent a car as it would save a lot of cost. There are two options of car rentals; international car rentals or local car rentals. If you cannot rent a car, regular taxis are available and they are cheaper than Uber or Careem. Public buses are also available but I did not try them during my visit.

International or Major car rental companies requires a credit card to block an insurance fee of 1,000 AED which will be returned back after 15 days if the renter did not get any traffic fines. I tried using a prepaid credit card but it doesn’t work because it is considered as a debit card. I would always prefer renting from an international car rental because they would have a full insurance coverage in case of any damage.

Local car rental companies take 2,000 AED insurance fee in cash which will be returned back after 15 days to ensure no traffic tickets were issued under the renter. The risk with a local rental company is that it doesn’t have full insurance coverage for damage. I didn’t have a credit card so I had to go with a local company. It was my first time renting without a full insurance and thankfully the car came in one piece.

Driving License – GCC citizens can use their country’s driving license, however, for GCC residents and other nationalities, they need to have an international driving license when renting with a local company.

Things to Do

First, it’s best to understand the distribution of Abu Dhabi. It’s a cluster of different islands packed with different activities. So I’m going to list them down by Islands to help plan your itinerary better.

Yas Island

Yas Mall – Yas Mall is basically your gateway to Ferrari World and Clymb. As mentioned earlier, most places in Abu Dhabi are indoors, including their amusement park! Only the rides take you outside and everything else is indoor.

Ferrari World – Need I need to say more on this? Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi is home to the fastest rollercoaster in the world going up to 240km/h. It’s so fast that riders have to wear goggles. There are 4 rollercoasters in Ferrari World that I’m going to list down in my favorite order. It is definitely not for the faint of heart.

• Ferrari Rossa – The FASTEST in the world!
• Flying Aces – Lots of twist and turns! It is also the longest in time compared to the rest. Make sure to sit by the edge.
• Turbo Track – An unexpected vertical ride to a free fall zero gravity. Get seated at the very right end of the ride.
• Fiorarno GT Challenge – A calming ride compared to the other four to calm the nerves.

This is a really great time to go to Ferrari World as there is barely any queue so you don’t even need to get a fast track. I did not have to wait in line for any of the rides. Moreover, all the rides are very short so you won’t be left waiting too long and they sanitize the rides after every round.

Note: All rollercoaster rides require fabric face mask which you can purchase at Ferrari World stalls for 35 AED (2 masks). I’d recommend buying a few for back up in case they fly off during your ride.

Clymb – Wether you’re an experienced or non experienced climber, Clymb is a place to explore your skills in rock climbing and also to tick off the list of climbing at the tallest climbing wall in the world at a height of 40 meters. Clymb also has an Indoor Skydiving experience which is a lot of fun! Ask for a high fly experience to go up high on the tunnel and feel the thrill.

Tip: Get down the escalator from Ferrari World or Clymb and go outside to see the beautiful structure of Clymb.

Warner Bros – I personally did not get a chance to visit Warner Bros but I would recommend it for anyone visiting there.

Tip: Get a cheaper ticket by buying for Ferrari World and Warner Bros in one package.

Karting – Yas Island is home for the F1 circuit and I’m saddened that I did not get a chance to experience karting while I was there. I’ve heard so many great reviews on it and I’d recommend this to be on your list!

Iris Club – A nice lounge-like roof bar to unwind after a long day.

White – White, formerly MAD is only open on weekends for anyone looking to party during the time in Abu Dhabi.

*It’s important to take note that many clubs/bars does not allow dancing due to Covid-19 restrictions. Always check ahead of time to avoid disappointments.

Saadiyat Island

Soul Beach – As the name implies, it’s a beach with a soul. Pure pristine white sand beach with clear blue water and at only a price of 75 AED for an umbrella and a sunbed. The beach has many really nice restaurants and cafes along the shore. I went to Alkalime; a plant based cafe for coffee that was really good and the ambiance is beautiful. For lunch, I went to The Steak House which had really good sandwich at a reasonable price. The beach has a very clean shower and toilet facilities to change in. I loved the fact that they have underground parking at a price of 10 AED after the first hour which makes it very convenient as you go up the elevator, the beach is right there.

L’ouvre – L’ouvre Abu Dhabi is an architectural masterpiece that would require a good 6 hours or more to explore the 21 buildings filled with artifacts collections, art, xxx They also have exhibitions held in one of the buildings. It is also a very picturesque location for photography when the sun is above the structure and passes through the dome which creates drops of rain on the wall. It’s also a beautiful spot to watch for sunset. Go Karts are available for free to transport you from the parking to the museum,

Kayaking is also available at L’ouvre to admire the majestic white structure with a geographical patterned dome while paddling on the still water of the Arabian Sea. Also, yoga under the dome.

Tip: Go at 12pm to experience the rain of light and also sunset by 6pm.

Jubail Island

Jubail Mangrove Park – If you’re looking for some time to unwind in nature, Jubail Mangrove Park is the place to be. They also have mindfull and wellness program such as yoga and sound healing in the most calm area surrounded with ecological wonders of mangroves.

Abu Dhabi

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – An iconic and beautiful mosque that is certainly not to be missed.

* Important: Female must cover up to the shoulder, below the knee and headscarf at all times in the mosque. Clothing with cartoons is not allowed in the mosque.

Wahat Al Karama – Located just across Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is probably the best place to shoot for sunset with a reflection of the mosque on the water. Entrance if free.

Qasr Al Hosn – A place to learn about the birth of Abu Dhabi. It’s small and can be covered in an hour or less.

Marsa Mina – If you’re looking for a different atmosphere for having a meal, Marsa Mina might be an option. It’s a cluster of food trucks located just across from the port where you can see cruises parked.

Other spots to consider; Qasr Al Watan, Al Qana Bridge and Founder’s Memorial

Almost everywhere in Abu Dhabi requires a negative PCR Test within the last 14 days. Entering Abu Dhabi by land from Dubai also requires a negative PCR Test.

Fast forward to today, I long for Sundays and Tuesdays which are the days my friends and I had set up for playing sports.

It all started in Riyadh, when a good friend invited me to join their weekly volleyball game. It took a few games until I had the courage to face the ball and not run away from it. Despite on basically standing and running away from the ball, I still enjoyed every bit of it. The fact that I am socializing, having fun and laughs while moving rather than sitting at home or in a coffee shop makes it a highlight day of every week.

In October 2021, I moved back to Jeddah and was absolutely crushed to miss out on the weekly volleyball games in Riyadh. So I started to look for courts to rent in Jeddah and found a few of them.

Now, my friends and I play Volleyball every Sunday and Basketball every Tuesday and I couldn’t be more grateful for this.

Tabuk is best explored by renting a car as all of the beautiful places have huge distances between them. The drive is very enjoyable as you will pass through different landscapes and scenery.

Tabuk Region is bordered by Jordan and without a doubt, it is one of my favorite regions in Saudi Arabia for its diverse and unique landscapes. As I drove along Tabuk regions, I was captivated by the tall mountains surrounded by red sand dunes, my jaw dropped as I drove along the coastline with Egypt on the horizon and mountainous silhouette from the Sinai Peninsula against the Aqaba Gulf.

Catalina Sea Plane

Catalina Seaplane is a military seaplane from the 1930s that belonged to an American family who was traveling around the world and happened to have landed in Ras Al Sheikh Hamid. The seaplane shows the bullet holes that were shot by the bedouins in the area who thought it was a threat. There weren’t any casualties, the family was flown to Jeddah for interrogation and eventually let free. However, the seaplane remains in the same spot.

Haql & Georgios Shipwreck

Haql is located in the northwest of Saudi Arabia, bordered by Jordan and along the Gulf of Aqaba. It is one of the popular spots for diving and there are many beach resorts in Haql.

Many visit Haql to see the long-abandoned shipwreck called the Georgios G Shipwreck. The abandoned cargo line is left stranded since 1958 due to the narrow route that caused the ship to get caught on the corals.

Tayyib Ism

Located just off the coast of Aqaba and across from Sinai, legend has it that Prophet Moses crossed the Red Sea and split the mountain in half. It starts off with beautiful palm trees and as you walk through the crack, there are streams along the way. It’s definitely a must-visit.

Sharma

I have not been there but it said to be one of the best beaches. There is also a restaurant in a hotel where one could enjoy a meal with a sea view.

Magna

A drive along the coastline of Magna is not to be missed! You’ll find yourself stopping on the side of the road to marvel the beauty of the steep mountains. It is also believed that Prophet Moses crossed the Red Sea to Magna.

Spring of Moses

Located in a palm tree lush area, the spring is said to be where Prophet Moses drank after crossing from Egypt. The area has a perfect view of the sea, valleys and palm trees.

Wadi Disah

If I had one place to visit in Tabuk Region, I’d say “Wadi Disah” without hesitation. That’s how special and spectacular this canyon is. The 15km canyon is best explored with a 4×4. There are plenty of generous and hospitable locals who visit the valley whom you could hitchhike with. Before arriving to Wadi Disah, there are several strawberry farms worth a visit if it’s during the season.

Al Bad’a

It is often skipped and less popular than other spots in Tabuk Region. However, there are several tombs from the Nabatean period that are worth a visit even if they are only a few and not well maintained. Unlike Madain Saleh, Mughayer Shuaib can easily be accessed.

Umluj

Umluj is also known as the Maldives of Saudi for it’s clear and pristine beaches and white sandbanks. It is a popular destination for beach camping trips.

Tuesday’s Market

Tuesday’s Market is open all week long despite the name of the market. The market has stalls from traditional handicrafts, honey, clothes, incense, and many other locally made products with a great bargain price.

Al Muftaha Art Village

A spot that cannot be missed! The village was founded by the government in 1989 to promote art. Al Muftaha village showcases the artistic culture of the Aseer Region. The beautiful mud houses are covered with local style art known as Al Qatt al Assiri as well as graffiti and other forms of art by local and regional artists.

Muftaha Art Village brings together a community of passionate photographers, handicrafts and fine artists.

It can be visited all day long but the stores open from 5 p.m. where you can purchase locally made souvenirs and handicrafts with high quality and great prices too.

Al Mahatbah

This gem is a definite must-visit. The area has many ponds, streams, natural slides, and mini waterfalls. The trail is very easy and flat with minimal scrambling required in some spots. Don’t forget to bring your swimwear and jump into the natural pool!

There isn’t any visiting hours or entrance fee. It’s a public area and can be accessed by anyone and at any time.

Tanoumah

Tanoumah is known for its pleasant weather for a hike, climb, and camping. There’s also a popular waterfall in the area.

Tamniah Museum

The most beautiful museum I have ever visited in Aseer Region. The museum is surrounded by an abandoned and old neighborhood with mud-brick buildings. Stroll around the narrow alleyways before entering the museum.

The museum has 3 stories with many beautiful rooms that are decorated with the local art style known as Al Qatt Al Assiri which is the painting on the walls.

They also allow visitors to spend the night for a fee to experience life in the past.

Habala Rope Village

Habala rope village was inhabited by the flower men who fleed from the Ottoman Empire. The village was only accessible by a rope ladder, hence the name Habala (Rope). It can now be accessed by a cable car.

However, I don’t recommend visiting the village because there is absolutely nothing to see. It’s best to enjoy the Habala mountain from the top.

Mount Soudah

Jabal Sawdah is the highest peak of Saudi Arabia with an elevation of 3,000 meters above sea level. There is also a cable car to enjoy a scenic view of the highest peak in Saudi Arabia.

Don’t forget to carry a jacket or any warm clothing when visiting Soudah Mountain.

Rijal Almaa

Rijal Alma is the highlight of the Aseer Region. The village is made out of natural stones, clay, wood and striking windows played an important role in trade between Yemen and the Hejaz Region.

The people of Rijal Alma were famous for their bravery in many battles including a battle against the Ottoman. The Ottomans managed to occupy some parts of the Aseer Region, but they were defeated in Rijal Alma.

Turshi Museum

Turshi Museum is located close to Rijal Alma. It is owned by Mohammed Turshi who is one of the oldest tour guides in the region. Mohammed Turshi built his own mosque, majlis and turned his old school into a museum.

How to get around: It is best to go around with a car. Rent a car with unlimited mileage or contact a driver.

Wadi Wej

Taif is one of the cities that receives more rain than other parts of Saudi Arabia. Hence, there are several Wadi (valleys) that has streams of water running through most of the year. It’s a nice spot to see greens and water running through (yes, we appreciate seeing even a little bit of greens because it’s not easy to find in the city) It’s good for a picnic or simply a walk along the stream.

We also spotted a man fishing under the rocks!

Wadi Dhe Ghazal

It’s another popular Wadi in Taif but I have never been there.

Mount Qarnayt

It’s the best spot for camping, hiking, and climbing! The location is a bit tricky to reach, it’s best to ask locals to give the exact direction because Google Maps won’t take you to the final spot.

Fruit Market

Taif is known for its fresh and local produce. Everyone who goes to Taif always come back with cartons of produce of the season.

Al Kamal Rose Farm

Taif is known for its roses. A visit to one of the oldest rose farm owned by generations of Kamal family is a must-do.

Cable Car

The cable car is best visited during the golden hours to get a picturesque view of the mountain and the winding roads against a sunset background. The price per person is quite pricey though. Its 18 USD per person.

Mount Dakkah

Mount Dakkah is the highest peak in Taif. Its a nice spot for a picnic and a viewpoint.

Abdullah Al Sulaiman Palace

Abdullah Al Sulaiman Palace also known as Jabra palace is one of the many abandoned palaces in Taif. The palace is on the verge of breaking down due to negligence. King Saud used to stay here when he was a crown prince and the palace belonged to the late minister of Abdullah Al Sulaiman.

The details, marbles, and architecture is simply beautiful!

Writer’s Palace

Writer’s Palace or also known as Bait Al Katib was built in 1897. It was once home for King Faisal. The architecture style is a mix of Hejazi, Islamic and tall Roman pillars. It is one of the palaces that desperately needs restoration.

Saleeg Badiya

One cannot visit Taif without trying their traditional dish of Saleeg which is basically rice porridge with chicken. Saleeg Badiya is the best place that makes it. Also, ask for their chicken broth for a delicious and heartwarming drink to sip on or pour on your rice.

Shobra Palace

The Shobra Palace was built in 1905. It was home to King Abdulaziz and later home to King Faisal.

Kaki Palace

Kaki Palace also known as Beit Kaki was a residence of a wealthy and important merchant. It is currently closed but the gem can be admired from outside for its intricately carved windows and doors.

Mohammed Suroor Sabban Palace

Another abandoned palace is closed to the public. During my last visit in April 2019, there was an open gate where we were able to access the palace.

Souk Okaz

Souk Okaz is a very unique ancient and historical festival that is held once a year in the exact location where it started in the past. It is my favorite festival in Saudi Arabia. It is deeply rooted in the history where people used to gather to show their art, poetry and they also hold camel races.

Al Kou Mosque

Al Kou Mosque was built at the end of the Ottoman era and it is known for the story of a Christian boy named Addas who served grapes to the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). It is also said that the prophet leaned against the mosque which gives the name Al Kou (The Elbow)

Here’s how to arrange a boat trip on your own:

1. Visit the closest Coast Guard and inquire on the closest Marina or simply find one.
2. Check if it is allowed to dive if you plan on diving
3. Check if there’s any gear rental shop nearby. (Umluj didn’t have one)
4. Talk to the captain on the places you want to visit; snorkeling, shallow area, mangroves, reefs, etc.
5. Give all IDs to the coast guard to issue a permit. You will take the IDs back upon your return.
6. Rates per hour vary in every city and according to the boat type.

• Jeddah: 300 SAR/hour (11 Pax)

Beach Camping in Saudi Arabia

There are plenty of pristine public beaches that are secluded and tucked away from the city where you could go and spend the day or even a few nights.

Finding a spot where you could swim and camp should be done cautiously as there are some areas where it is not allowed or dangerous to swim in.

1. Open Google Map (Satellite) and check which area seems to be sandy with corals.
2. Check with the closest coast guard on the spots where you could camp and swim so you don’t waste your time wandering in areas that might not be allowed to swim or camp in.
3. Drive along the coast and pick your camping spot.
4. Go back to the nearest coast guard and inform them of your camping spot and provide an ID of a male who will be responsible for the campsite.
5. The coast guard will give you a permit and a number to be placed on your campsite so they can identify each campsite.
6. Set your camp and enjoy your time!

Coast guards constantly move back and forth to ensure safety. I never felt bothered and they were always helpful whenever I needed anything.

UPDATE: Beach camping is no longer allowed along all the coasts of Saudi Arabia. Individuals can sleep along the beach only with a sleeping bag and without a tent. Sometimes, you can get lucky if you are allowed by the coast guard to camp a couple of meters away from the shore.
