Since the recent attack of 21st April 2019 in the heart of Colombo, the country’s economy and tourism industry has been compromised.

It’s sad to see the country that was once a top tropical destination for surfers, travelers and anyone who looks for the evergreen nature, history, and a melting pot of culture left Sri Lanka or canceled their holiday or rerouted to another country.

I met a group of Spanish travelers in the Maldives who were supposed to go to Sri Lanka but rerouted since to the Maldives instead.

I was well aware of the unfortunate event prior to booking my flight. I am not one to get hindered by such events. My spontaneous and unplanned solo trip quickly became a group trip with friends and people we meet during our time in Sri Lanka.

We arrived at the start of the day at 9 a.m. Considering our unplanned and unresearched travel, we were supposed to go to Colombo immediately but decided to start in Negombo first as it is much closer to the airport.

The airport is located 20 mins away from Negombo and 1 hour away from Colombo.

A quick read on Negombo through a couple of blog posts suggested that it’s a lively and most popular destination for those who just arrived or departing Sri Lanka.

But when we arrived, there weren’t any tourists but us and a handful of locals. Then we started to wonder, where are the tourists? Did the number of tourists actually plunge down to almost zero?

Negombo

It’s a coastal town that’s only 20mins away by Tuktuk for 2 USD to unwind. It’s supposed to be a very popular destination, however, upon our visit; there were only a few locals.

It is a much-preferred location to stay if you need to spend one night before exploring the country as opposed to Colombo. Better yet, don’t spend a night in Colombo or Negombo. Explore both cities for a couple of hours and depart to another city on the same day if your time allows.

How to get there from the airport: Tuktuk for 2 USD

Colombo

If you had to spend one night in Colombo, I would recommend trying and spending it during the weekend and experience the nightlife. As Sri Lanka is still recovering from the recent attack, the only proper nightlife you would find is in Colombo bar/clubs.

How to get there from Negombo: Take a bus from Negombo Town for 0.80 USD

Kandy

Kandy is located in the heart of the country along the way to Sigiriya, Nuwara Aliya, and Ella so it is almost unavoidable. I was not fascinated much by the city as there isn’t much to do except a stroll around Kandy Lake. There’s a well-known temple called Tooth Relic, however, I did not visit it as it has an entrance fee of 1,500

There’s also a spice garden about 6km away from Kandy which could be added as something to do. However, it probably isn’t the best spice gardens. There are many more along the way between Kandy – Dumballa.

How to get there from Colombo: Take the train from Colombo Fort for 1.30 USD. It takes 3 hours and there isn’t any seat assignment. So you have to be at the platform before the train arrives and rush in to grab your seat or else you will end up standing for the entire journey. Unless if you take a first-class or second class train.

Sigiriya

A city not to be missed. It is a jungle with many wild elephants and also where the popular UNESCO Rock is located.

There are two ways to view the beautiful Sigiriya Rock also known as the Lion Rock. You could either climb up the rock by walking up 1,200 steps or view the rock from Pidurangala.

We chose to view the rock from Pidurangala because it’s much cheaper, we get to actually see the Lion Rock and the climb is much less demanding.

Pidurangala Hike

The entrance passes through a temple where you would be asked to cover legs and shoulders. Once you’ve passed the temple, you could uncover. The trail isn’t straightforward and it’s important to keep a lookout for hidden arrows. We missed the signs as we went before sunrise and only noticed the arrows when we came down. The hike is meant to take 30 minutes but it took us an hour because we got lost and scrambled through boulders and whatnot.

Pidurangala Entrance Fee: 3USD

Lion Rock Hike

We did not try the hike at Lion Rock mainly because of the expensive entrance fee. According to travelers we met that went through the hike, it is worth it if you are interested in history and up for walking 1,200 steps.

Lion Rock Entrance Fee: 30USD

How to get there from Kandy: Take a bus from Goodshed bus station to Dumballa for 1.3 USD. Then take a tuk-tuk from Dumballa to Sigiriya (20mins) for 5USD

How to get to Pidurangala from Sigiriya: It is advised to use a tuk-tuk at dusk even if it is walking distance as there are wild elephants walking around. It costs 2.5 USD. We walked our way back during daylight.

Ella

It was the liveliest city with the most tourists upon my visit in June 2019. The main street was lively enough and had enough travelers to make it seem alive.

There are a couple of must-visit places in Ella

Little Adam’s Peak is a short hike along tree plantations and takes about 1 hour one way. It gives a stunning view

Adam’s Peak is a longer trail than Little Adam’s Peak, hence the name. We did not try the route because some travelers we met were not able to see any view when they got up to the peak and recommended Little Adam’s Peak instead.

Ravana Falls is the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. There’s a small pool at the bottom of the falls where locals swim and shower. We took a dip for a while, the water was freezing cold. The waterfall can be viewed just off the main road.

Nine Arch Bridge is without a doubt the most scenic spot I’ve been to in Sri Lanka.

How to get there: The most popular way is to go from Kandy to Ella by train. It costs 2.5 USD. You can opt to get off at Nuayayo Station to explore Nuwara Eliya and visit the tea plantations or have a continuous 6 hours journey to Ella.

The route is very scenic where you will come across tea plantations, waterfalls, rivers, and small towns.

The 3rd class is the most popular one where you could hang off the door and take that popular photo from Ella Train.

Arugam Bay (East Coast)

It is mandatory to visit the beautiful coasts of Sri Lanka. The only question is which coast to visit and it is determined by the weather/season upon your visit. You could refer to this blog or ask the locals when you’re there.

We visited in June and we initially planned to visit the South Coast but were advised to go to East Coast instead and many of the travelers we met were also heading to East Coast. We did not regret our decision and enjoyed every bit of sunrise and waves.

The best way to explore the coast of Sri Lanka is by renting a scooter so you could visit the different bays and you might come across a few wild elephants on the way to Elephants Rock. Remember not to overpass the white line or you’d be fined 😛 We got pulled over but managed to get out of it without paying any fine. (We didn’t bribe them)

We had the best meals at Leaf & Vine, and the best coffee at Bites. As for nightlife, Friends Indeed Bar was the only place that was alive. Its a chill bar by the beach.

And don’t miss out surfing and yoga. We did our yoga session Stardust Beach Hotel where we stayed and it is also rated as one of the best in Arugam Bay.

Another special thing we spotted is the tailor-made bikini store for those looking to make a customized and personalized pair of bikinis or shorts. It’s located across from the Pacific Hotel.

Kumana Bird Sanctuary National Park

I would not recommend visiting Kumana unless if you’re interested in Bird Watching. There are many different types of birds but it is not the best place. I would suggest visiting Yala Park or other parks for Elephant Safari instead.

When Eid Al Adha holiday approached, I didn’t have any valid visa or even a destination in mind since all flights have tripled their price.

The cheapest flight was to Pakistan and it’s the country I’ve really wanted to go but the thought of going through a long visa process was dreadful.

Until a simple message to an acquaintance opened up the door for me as he knows someone in the consulate that was going to help me get a visa.

With such a short time before my travel date, I didn’t even look for a CS host or think of anything except buying my flight to Islamabad.

Heck, I even traveled with ONE WAY flight! I have NEVER done that! Every plane I’ve boarded always requires a return or connecting flight. Luckily, this one didn’t even ask and I also got upgraded to Business Class!

Anyways! I just wanted to show you guys how impromptu the trip was. My next worry was the immigration in case they ask for a return flight or even accommodation because I didn’t have any.

I got to the immigration counter, he asked;

IO: “Where’s your return ticket?”

Me: “I don’t have any because I’m not sure if I would fly out from Lahore or Karachi or any other cities.”- I started to shiver a little out of panic.

IO: “Show me the Letter of Invitation.”

Me: “I don’t have a copy but I can show it on my phone”

IO: “But this is in Karachi, you’re in Islamabad. I need an address and contact person in Islamabad” Shit! I’m screwed.

Me: “I don’t have an address; I have my friend waiting for me outside” (BIG FAT LIE) I don’t even know why I said that. I should have said, I’ll make a booking now or anything else but lie!

IO: “Your friend is waiting outside?”

Me: “Yes, he is. He’s going to take me to my accommodation so I don’t have the address.”

IO: “Give me his number.” And shit got real.

Me: “Here you go.” I gave a number of a CS guy I spoke to just an hour before taking off and I was praying for him to answer the call. I mean who would answer at 5 a.m.!

Then he started speaking to him in Urdu. I was in shock and surprised that he actually answered his phone.

I was praying to God that he would remember my name! We only spoke for a bit on WhatsApp.

All I could understand was “guest, and address”

Then I heard him say “panch minute” which means 5 minutes. And I thought; Hold up! Did he ask how long it would take for me to go out? Is he actually outside?

He hung up the call and I quickly asked: “Is my friend outside?” He said “Yes”

I calmly nodded but I was jumping in so much happiness inside!

My big fat lie fell right into place! HOW?! HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?! The guy I spoke to on CS did NOT tell me he was coming to pick me at 5 a.m. from the airport!

I was off to a great start!

I walked out of the airport with a jaw drop. Half of Pakistanis were at the airport! I have NEVER EVER seen such crowded receiving end at the airport. I felt like I was walking in a pageant.

Yep yep, All eyes on me! *beauty queen wave*

So here’s how my trip went while in Pakistan

Day 1 – Rawalpindi/Islamabad

As soon as I arrived, my CS host was trying to find accommodation within my budget range. Accommodation in Islamabad isn’t cheap I tell ya! Airbnb or CouchSurfing would be your best options.

A basic room in a guest house costs between 16 to 25USD and this is BASIC.

I stayed at Rakaposhi Guest House in F7 for 16USD a night.

After freshening up, I started exploring Islamabad on a bike using the app Careem.

Faisal Mosque

The mosque is funded by King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, hence the name Faisal Mosque. It’s shaped like a Bedouin tent. The mosque is located on the Margala hills which make it visible from everywhere in Islamabad.

Said Pur Village

A stunning tourist built village but also has a real village with old temples behind all the colorful restaurants and cafes.

Monal Restaurant

There are many restaurants for a viewpoint of Islamabad along the hill. Monal seems to be one of the famous ones. However, the food wasn’t great. Maybe I didn’t order the right items but you guys should try the other less popular restaurants and share your experience!

Lok Virsa Museum

Lok Virsa is a cultural and heritage museum where you can learn about the cultures and traditions of different regions in Pakistan.

Website: http://lokvirsa.org.pk/

Pakistan Monument

Legit one of the most beautiful monument I have ever seen. It’s best visited at night. The four leaves represent the four provinces of Pakistan. And in each lotus petals, there are detailed drawings of its history.

It’s simply beautiful!

Day 2 – Rawalpindi/Islamabad

Visa errand all day!

I spent my morning biking around the old city of Rawalpindi and had breakfast in a local restaurant.

By 9 a.m. I went back to Islamabad to start my visa process for Afghanistan.

I arrived, spoke to the counter and explained my purpose of visit. After he is convinced, then only he gave me the form to fill.

I filled the form, got my passport and visa copy but I needed a contact person and address in Kabul before handing it in. I waited about an hour until a friend replied then submitted my paper. After an hour, they said they needed a Non-Objection Certificate from the Yemeni embassy.

So I quickly rushed before they closed. I got to the embassy and sat with the ambassador. We had a nice chat and he gave me ample advice to avoid visiting countries with question marks on them for my own safety. He was really sweet and kind but of course, I didn’t take the advice 😛

It took another hour until I got the papers, then I went back to the embassy only to find out that they have gone on a two hours break. So I went to Centaurus Mall to kill time and cool off. I sat in Gloria Jean’s for a nice view of Islamabad. Two hours passed, went back and submitted all my papers and payment fee and then told they only accept US Dollars. I went and exchanged to USD. After I came back and paid, they said to collect it on 29th August and I needed it for 22nd Aug so I asked for an urgent visa. That was an extra 50USD so I had to find the one and only bank where I can withdraw and then go to a currency exchange and went back only to find out I was 10USD short! 50+80USD= 120USD. What a brain fart! I went back to exchange an extra 10USD and then submitted my documents. Then I had to wait under the heat until 5:30 p.m. to receive my visa. IT WAS A LONG TIRING DAY.

My host picked me up with his cousin and friend then we went off to Murre. We arrived rather late because my visa was taking so long so we didn’t get the most out of Muree. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the cool weather and view from Gloria Jean’s.

After a 4 hours ride to Murree, I decided to go to Hunza Valley the same evening.

So off I went on a 14 hours carpool journey to the North of Pakistan I was actually looking forward to the long journey. I got in the car at about 11 p.m. and slept through the journey like a baby cause I didn’t sleep on my first night. (I can’t sleep whenever I stay alone in a guesthouse/hotel)

Day 3 – Hunza Valley

I woke up with a mountainous view in Gilgit Baltistan. I arrived at about 12 p.m. in Aliabad.

The driver registered me at the first checkpoint and showed this to the following checkpoints until we arrive. This is also needed when leaving Gilgit Baltistan.

I stayed in the Mountain View Hotel for 12USD per night. It’s a basic room without electricity LOL! Hunza had a power cut that week so the hotel owner would only turn on the generator a few hours during the night.

Karimabad is the go-to place for cafés, restaurants and it is also where the two forts are located; Baltit Fort & Altit Fort.

It is about 10 minutes ride on a Suzuki from Aliabad. It costs 0.16cents.

Staying in Karimabad would be ideal but a night stay during offseason could start from 40USD/night due to its tourist hub location. Aliabad is only 10 minutes ride away, so might as well save the cash and stay in Aliabad.

Baltit Fort, Altit Fort, Café de Hunza, and Pavillion restaurant is a must visit. I really wanted to visit the Khunjrab Pass which is the highest border crossing in the world. It also has the highest ATM in the world!

However, the cheapest car I found was for 65USD which is a GREAT deal but I was on a budget and I couldn’t find other travelers to go with and share the cost.

Day 4 – Hunza Valley

Since the Khunjrab plan went down the drain, a CS host offered to take on a tour around Hunza Valley in exchange for filling the petrol for 8USD per person which is again a great bargain!

We started with Attabad lake, a stunning clear blue lake that was formed after a landslide that covered two villages under the beautiful lake. The lake was formed in 2015 and had taken up a large size in such a short time.

After that, we went to Husseini suspension bridge which is also one of the most dangerous suspension bridge in the world. There is absolutely no safety measure if you drop which I hope no one drops! The wobbly rope and widely placed wooden plank

There we also enjoyed the view of Passu Cones. We had the option to hike up to Passu Glacier but I was so tired and out of shape to attempt the climb.

So we went to Borith lake.

After that, we headed back and on the way, we saw some black glacier.

He dropped me off at Café de Hunza again, since it’s a great café with a stunning view and most importantly, a good WiFi connection. Internet coverage is really terrible around Gilgit.

A CouchSurfer joined my table with another traveler and we had a nice chat.

In the evening we went for a delicious dinner at Café Kamal in Aliabad and hung out on the roof of our guest house and watched the Milky Way. Eagle’s nest is said to be a great spot for sunrise, sunset or milky way viewing if the sky is clear.

Day 5:

The ride back from Hunza Valley to Islamabad, unfortunately, starts at 7 a.m. So I was in the car from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

My host in Islamabad offered his family’s wedding hall to crash in and there was a wedding rehearsal when I got there so I got a little preview of a Pakistani wedding.

We hung out at a café until about 3a.m. where I decided to drag my host to Lahore with me and to take the bus at 6:30 a.m.

Day 6 – Lahore

We missed the 6:30 bus and waited an hour for the next bus. The Daewoo bus is very comfortable, cheap and convenient. We took the cheapest bus and it was great. It was 6.5USD for a 4 hours journey to Lahore.

We were picked up by another CS to tour us around Lahore. He was so nice to pick us up very last minute in his car. The weather was extremely humid!

Badshahi Mosque

This red sandstone mosque with intricate tile work and white marble interior is 350 years old from the Mughal Era. I visited a day before Eid Al Adha so the main entrance area was covered with shades for the Eid Prayer.

Street Food

Lahore is known to be the King of street food in Pakistan. However, they were all closed due to Eid and we found only one place that was open where I had knuckle soup. It was DE-LISH! The first time I tried it was in Sudan and simply loved it!

Wagah Border

The Rangers perform a parade and they both compete on who stomps the loudest, swing their leg highest, and untying the flag!

It’s a very light and patriotic event where both sides chant to their country’s slogan and cheer for their rangers. It’s definitely an experience you shouldn’t miss.

Then we left Lahore around 10.30 p.m. and arrived in Islamabad at 3 a.m.

Day 7:

I was picked up at 6 a.m. from the wedding hall and started my journey to Kabul which you can read more about here.

Transport

Intercity: There are buses, trains, and carpools.

Daewoo Bus: You can book online or get the ticket at the station.

Faisal Mover: This is on the lower standard which I have not personally tried. I used their car service which was in an old car without an AC.

Carpooling: This is the most convenient way for long distances to cut the journey time by 5 to 6 hours compared to going on a bus.

Islamabad – Hunza Valley 32 USD

Islamabad – Gilgit Baltistan 28USD

Hunza Valley – Islamabad 36USD

Islamabad – Torkham Border (Afghanistan) 16USD

Within the city – Careem is a ride hail app similar to Uber that is widely used in the major cities in Pakistan. It’s very cheap and convenient. It even comes with a bike and tuk-tuk option!

Accommodation

Islamabad: The most recommended neighborhood is F6, F7, G6, and G7.

Rawalpindi: Unless you’re staying at an Airbnb/Couchsurfer’s house, you might get denied to stay in a guest hotel as they would need to get paperwork done prior to accepting your stay. I tried to stay in a guest house but they suggested to go back to Islamabad.

Hunza Valley:

Karimabad would be an ideal location but the price gets tripled.

Aliabad would be the next best option because it is only 10 minutes away from Karimabad.

Notes:

Carry a few copies of your passport and visa. Intercity travel check posts usually take a copy. If you are going to Hunza, get a police registration card at the Gilgit Police Station. From then on, you would only need to show the card instead of giving a copy of the passport and visa.

Did you know that Islamabad is the second most beautiful country in the world?!

I did not know until my host told me after I kept telling him in awe of how GREEN and BEAUTIFUL the city is!

I thought I was going to walk into a deserted landscape but it is the complete opposite!

Everything is structured in blocks and every block has its own center or marketplace. It’s a small, very peaceful, and calm city. No hustle and bustle in this capital city!

It is home to the second highest mountain in the world.

The K2 or Karakorum mountain range is the second highest in the world and also one of the deadliest one. The range passes through Pakistan, India, China, and extending towards Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

Expedition to the Karakorum can be arranged with www.karakoroumexpedition.com

You must have heard of India vs Pakistan debate all the time, but did you know that they compete every single day since the 1960s at the border?!

The Rangers perform a parade and they both compete on who stomps the loudest, swing their leg highest, and untying the flag!

It’s a very light and patriotic event where both sides chant to their country’s slogan and cheer for their rangers. It’s definitely an experience you shouldn’t miss.

There’s a Kingdom within Democratic Pakistan.

Say what?! How is that even possible right?

Up until 40 years ago, Gilgit Baltistan had its own kingdom, until the last king decided to be a part of the democracy. The royal family still holds their title and receives royalties from the Pakistani government.

I was mind blown about this unheard fact. However, the people of Gilgit Baltistan don’t carry the privilege of a Pakistani citizen since the UN considers it as a disputed area.

They have a different culture, language, features, and traditions. It’s like stepping in an entirely different country.

One of the largest mosques in the world can be spotted from every angle in the capital city!

The mosque is funded by King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, hence the name Faisal Mosque. It’s shaped like a Bedouin tent. The mosque is located on the Margala hills which make it visible from everywhere in Islamabad.

They have taken the ATM technology and capability on a new level!

Pakistan installed an ATM at 16,000 feet above sea level withstanding extreme weather conditions!

They also made it to the Guinness world record!

Highest international border crossing in the world

Khunjerab pass is also the highest border crossing in the world! It’s the border of Pakistan and China. You could make your way up there if you are ever in Hunza! It’s only 3 hours ride away.

Since I am not a big fan of trekking so I visited these instead during my 5 days trip and eventually ended up doing a short trek because WHY NOT! 😀

– Durbar Square – It is square with several temples. Many of the buildings have collapsed due to the earthquake that happened in 2015.

There’s an entrance fee to the site but if you visit at sunrise, you may be able to skip paying the entrance fee!

– Nagarkot – If you are visiting Pokhara and short on time, you could skip Nagarkot.

There isn’t much to do in Nagarkot so you might as well view the Himalayas from Pokhara.

– Kailashnath Mahadev Statue – It is said to be the one of the world’s tallest Lord Shiva. It’s a scenic route towards the statue and it also has a nice view from the top.

Pokhara

– Mahendra & Bat Cave – I visited Mahendra & Bat Cave to kill time while waiting for the weather to clear up for my paragliding flight. I wouldn’t recommend it.

– Phewa Lake – The best way to view Phewa lake is either from Shanti Stupa which requires a few days of a hike or from a paragliding flight! A 30 minutes flight costs 50 – 55 USD with photos and videos. I know a lot of places charge higher than that, so don’t forget to bargain!

– Paragliding – This is a MUST do. It costs 50 USD including pick up and drops off at your accommodation. The flight starts at the Sarangkot hill and lands in Phewa Lake.

The flight takes about 30 minutes and ask the pilot to take you as high as possible and for a cross-country flight!

– Australian Base Camp – I decided to trek even though I’m not a fan of trekking. I chose Australian Base Camp because it takes only a total of about 3 hours and it is an easy trail. It’s safe and easy to do it on your own.

There’s a clear sign of the route or you can simply use the app maps.me.

I could have easily added a shortcut trek to Poonhill and white water rafting and still have plenty of time to rest but due to lack of preparation, I couldn’t fit them in.

So here is my itinerary suggestion if you have only 5 or 4 days in Nepal and if you want to do as much trekking as possible during a short time. You could replace the trek with some meditation, yoga, cooking class or simply hang out in the villages because Nepalis are the nicest people you’ll meet!

Day 1

Kathmandu – Sight Seeing

Take a night bus to Pokhara

Day 2

– Arrive in Pokhara

– Paragliding – Take the morning flight at 9 am and you will finish at around 11 a.m.

– White Water rafting – They have it at 9 am and 1pm. This will take about 3 – 4 hours so you could catch the 1pm after paragliding.

– Take a bus to Dhampus

– Rest at a homestay

Day 3

– Trek to Australian Basecamp for sunrise (It takes about an hour to two from Dhampus)

– Explore Dhampus Village

– Take a bus to Ulleri Village

– Rest at a homestay

Day 4

– Poonhill Trek for sunrise (Begin your trek at least 6 hours before sunrise)

– Descend and take a bus back to Kathmandu

Day 5

Rest or Explore until your departure time 😀

Villages to Visit – Here are some areas in which you can find the Gurung tribe that is in close proximity to Pokhara

1. Sirubari

2. Syangja

3. Panchase

Important: A permit is required to visit Poonhill Peak. Please do your research on that. Australian BaseCamp doesn’t need a permit as long as you don’t camp/spend overnight.

Other Notes:

1. Road conditions are terrible, be prepared to get comfy during your bus rides.

2. IT IS EXTREMELY CHEAP! As long as you avoid the tourist spots such as Lakeside.

3. For visa requirements, check here.

With a population of only 3.5 million for a country that is almost triple the size of Jeddah, it can get very quiet and sparse. However, this was not evident on my previous visit during Summer where the country was spurred with tourists.

Georgia is a peaceful country with many old architectures from the Soviet period, combined with naked trees, cold wind, and snow, makes it feel very rustic. It is a great choice for the country to unwind and getaway solo, with your partner or for a family!

The trip to Georgia arranged by Adil more known as @ibnfatota was filled with so many activities and fun!

https://www.nadaalnahdi.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Snowfight.mp4

I had a fabulous time with the group exploring the beauty, culture, and history of Georgia.

Here are the places we visited during the 8 days trip.

Day 1 Tbilisi

Bridge of Peace – The bow-shaped bridge has become an iconic landmark of Tbilisi with illuminating LEDs that attracts the eye in the evening. The bridge connects the old and new district of Tbilisi over the Kura River that passes through Azerbaijan and Turkey.

Location: https://goo.gl/maps/GbjM4xJZkf12

Music Hall in Rhike Park – The Music Hall with modern architecture is still under construction. Rumors have it that the current government does not want to proceed with the completion as the design is not suitable.

Mother of Georgia – It is probably one of the most notable landmarks in Tbilisi, standing tall on the edge of Sololaki Hill. She symbolizes the national culture by holding a bowl of wine to greet those who come as friends and a sword on the other hand for those who come as enemies.

Location: https://goo.gl/maps/TgJmweQmAiA2

Zipline – Just on top of the Sololaki hill (Mother Georgia), there is a zip line that will take you down to the botanical garden. It’s great short flight above the lush greens of the botanical garden.

https://www.nadaalnahdi.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/ZIPLINE2.mp4

Botanical Garden – It’s a great place to walk around and spend a few hours. It has variety trees, gardens from different countries and it also has a waterfall.

Old Town – The old town is where you will find beautiful architecture and old buildings hanging over a cliff above a river. It also has many restaurants, sulfur baths, and if you hang around there on a Saturday you will most likely run into a couple of gorgeous brides and grooms as they take beautiful photos. It is highly recommended to get lost among the narrow streets of the old town; not only the main streets.

Location: https://goo.gl/maps/zScEG9KdbaQ2

https://www.nadaalnahdi.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Bridal.mp4

Sulphur Bath – There are a couple of Sulphur Baths in the old town. They date back to 100 years ago. The price range is available from 1USD to 100USD. It’s definitely one of my must do in Tbilisi. It’s extremely cheap and the benefits are endless. You will find a couple of sulfur baths in the same area.

Location: https://goo.gl/maps/p8HnwEqQmF32

Juma Mosque – It is possibly one of two mosques in entire Georgia as Muslims constitutes only 9% of the population.

Location: https://goo.gl/maps/mEq7bFrvwWC2

Turtle Lake – It’s a great place to cool down during the heat of summer but not recommended in winter.

I moved around 3 cities in Cambodia within 3 days simply because I wanted to have a taste of different cities with very little budget. You might think I wasted time in traveling between cities but it was quite the opposite, I saved time and money!

Means of Commuting:

2 in 1 – My favorite type of commuting is an overnight sleeper bus! It saves cost from spending on accommodation and saves time as I am moving while I rest flat on a comfortable bed throughout the long journey overnight and wake up in a new city!

Day 1 – Siem Reap – Battambang

Walked around Siem Reap and had lunch at Sister Srey Cafe which serves delicious wholefood organic dishes. It is run by expats which is quiet common in Cambodia. A lot of the restaurants/cafes/hostels are run by expatriates than local itself. In fact, I hardly saw local restaurants.

I took the afternoon bus to Battambang which takes about 4 hours.

Battambang

Bamboo Train Ride – Call it a tourist trap but I had fun sitting on the wooden train with bamboo mat laid on top. As it started to move along the stretch of fields and sped through, I couldn’t help but smile and fully enjoyed the moment. The journey took about an hour for two ways. Beware of lots of people trying to guilt you into buying things at the end of the track!

Ate the best Chinese noodles and dumplings in my life at Chinese Noodle Dumpling Restaurant.

Location: https://goo.gl/maps/LPu7yMacgaS2

Chilled at Pomme Bar in the pub district.

Overnight sleeper bus to Sihanoukville – About 14 hours journey Sihanoukville – Phnom Penh (Stop Over) – Sihanoukville.

Day 2 – Sihanoukville

I woke up, arrived in Sihanoukville and decided to spend the day at Otres Beach; known for lots of hippies and a popular spot for backpackers.

I can’t blame them for diving straight to Otres, it has a very laid back feel, clean and not crowded or at least the time I was there (May). You could find cheap Khmer food along the stretch of Otres 1 & Otres 2.

Took an overnight sleeper bus from Battambang to Siem Reap.

Day 3 – Siem Reap

Hired a tuktuk ->bought Angkor Wat Ticket -> Angkor Wat.

I visited only 3 temples; Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm and Bayon.

I’m not big on temples, but Ta Prohm is phenomenal. I visited it twice and spent at least 2 hours each visit marveling at the tick roots shooting up from different places.

It is as if the roots are holding it together and at the same time, tearing it apart in the most beautiful way.

Armenia; I don’t know where to begin.

Should I start with the genocide, the people, the culture, their grief, their struggle, their generosity, or the food? There’s so much to cover about Armenia and I was there for only 3 days!

The experience I had in Armenia is one of the closest to my heart.

Armenia is a former Soviet Union country who got their independence in 1991. Even then, Armenia is still struggling to date yet they are persistent and courageous to stand as an independent country.

If you drive around the beautiful fields, you will find random Lada’s parked in the middle of the field only to find that people actually live in it! They may not have a lot but they are rich. What more could you ask than living in a rent free place in the middle of a vast fields of wild flowers and surrounded by lush green hills.

Armenia is probably one of the few countries where it is not invaded or abused by tourism. Yes, there are many tourist spots, the medieval monasteries, the genocide museum, the famous trekking sites, yet they maintain standard pricing and they humbly welcome tourists rather than try to gain every penny out of them. This is one of the main reasons why I fell in love with Armenia. The people are sincere.

Here are some things you could do in Armenia.

1. Lake Sevan

Lake Sevan is located about an hour drive from Yerevan. It costs only 2USD with a mashrutsky and a taxi to get to this humongous lake that comprises one sixth of Armenia.

I would recommend renting a car and have a drive around the huge lake as you can see different sceneries from one side to another.

You will encounter random picture perfect Ladas parked around the lake, a group of campers, fishermen and of course the great flora and fauna.

Many people camp and fish around the lake. The lake is home to rainbow trout.

I caught couple of eagles around the lake. Here I caught one of them on the act! I bet it had a good meal for lunch 😛

2. Sevanavank

There is a gorgeous Monastry on the hill by Lake Sevan; hence the name Sevanavank. Walk up to the top of the hill and enjoy a 360 view of the lake! 😀

3. Noratus

Noratus is a medieval cemetery with a field of crosses. You can easily spot the modern ones to the medieval ones. The intricate carvings with many different symbols on each cross on a field of grass is simply beautiful.

4. Arates

This monastery is very different to the others I have seen in Armenia, it’s a ruin, small, yet, it’s a masterpiece.

Every place in Armenia comes with a great view! Even if you are not into monasteries and ruins, check out the scenery!

5. Lucy Hotel

Lucy hotel is known for its grilled fish and on top of that, you could go and catch your own fish for lunch.

6. Noravank

The drive towards Noravank itself was fascinating. After being used to the lavish green hills and wildflowers; I saw a different side of Armenia. Instead of green, it was red, and instead of plants, there were red sandstones.

7. Republic Square

Don’t miss out the republic square and dancing fountain. I honestly enjoyed this one a lot more than the one in Dubai.

Perhaps because it is not as crazy packed as Dubai and they play local music! 😀

8. Khor Virap

KHOR VIRAP MUST BE ON THE TOP OF YOUR LIST! The day started all gloomy and then it started to rain for a while. The drive to Khor Virap from Yerevan is about 40km. So as time passes, the sun started to shine through bit by bit.

Then as you get closer to Khor Virap, you will notice HUGE VINEYARD with lots of berry trees around it!

Even a gloomy day won’t ruin my day when I started to pick on the sweetest and biggest berry I have ever tasted!

Check out the vineyard view just above Khor Virap! Believe me, it’s a lot wider than what my camera lense could capture!

So the journey to Khor Virap was a lot of fun. As I approach Khor Virap, the sky cleared up and mount Ararat was finally visible! Perfect timing!

Khor Virap holds a very important part of Armenian christianity. This is where Gregory; the Christian preacher was imprisoned. He converted Armenia from paganism to Christianity.

The only thing that broke my heart was that there were so many locals selling wish doves by the entrance door and they treat them in such inhumane way. They were placed in rice sacs and tossed around 🙁

Please please please do not support such thing!

9. Khor Virap Cafe

After enjoying my time in Khor Virap, I wanted to have some breakfast at the first food stall I see.

And there it was, a huge cafe; Khor Virap Cafe. It looked brand new and I thought of giving it a try and I am SO GLAD I did!

This gorgeous young lady spoke English well which was something very rare in Armenia. It’s always a pleasant surprise to find anyone who speaks even basic English.

As I got there, they were baking fresh ponchik which is a mouthwatering pastry filled with homemade custard that melts in your mouth! IT’S A MUST TRY! And get it freshly baked while it’s still nice and warm!

A sweet treat wasn’t going to fill up, so I ordered a bastrami sandwich and asked the lady to put whatever she thinks is good! My oh my, I am drooling as I type. First of all, their bastrami is DELICIOUS! I have never tried such amazing bastrami, and she filled it in with fresh and crunchy vegetables between a crusty yet soft bread. The portion was HUGE! It lasted for breakfast and lunch 😀

They also served complimentary apricots which tastes just like marmalade!

Make sure to visit Khor Virap Cafe after Khor Virap and thank me later! 😀

10. Areni Winery

Armenia is one of the oldest wine producing region in the world. It’s very common to find street stalls with glass bottles of homemade wine ready for sale.

Areni village in particular is famous for its wine production since thousands of years ago.

11. Goris

I stumbled on this town to get away from the foggy roads around Tatev. It felt very Armenian with the old stone houses and roses by the door. I would definitely recommend a stroll around Goris if time allows.

15. Harsnadzor Eco Lodge

If you plan on going to Wings of Tatem; the longest reversible tramway, spend a night in this Eco Lodge! Harsnadzor Eco Lodge is located only 5 minutes away from Wings of Tatev.

It is located by the edge of the mountain so you get a great view!

A beautiful full rainbow view after a foggy day 😀

The breakfast was spectacular! Simple, fresh and delicious!

16. Tatev Monastery

Since the clouds didn’t clear up, I didn’t get on the Wings of Tatev. It would’ve been a waste of money cause I won’t be able to see anything.

Instead, I visited the sites the next morning. Isn’t the location and structure simply perfect?

There was a mass when I visited the monastery.

The lady’s operatic voice gave me chills and goosebumps.

Everyone has to wear a headscarf when entering an Armenian monastery. Everyone greets each other with a hug and a kiss on both cheeks.

It was very moving to observe the mass ritual.

17. Genocide Museum

This is of course a must visit! I learnt so much about the genocide from the museum. It’s heartbreaking but we need learn the truth about the horrific genocide.

I acknowledge.

18. Vernissage Market

In this market, you will find everything! From vintage rugs to random pieces of cutleries that were found in abandoned villages.

Talk to the sellers! It’s always interesting to find out their origin and how they ended up selling in the market.

19. Soviet Union Train

It was time to say goodbye to Armenia, and I ended it in the best possible way. A ride to Georgia via Soviet Union Train. 😀

The ride was extremely comfortable and comes with an amazing view. Unfortunately, it was so comfortable that I slept throughout the journey and got to see the view only on the first few minutes of the ride 😛

There you go! 3 days in Armenia yet the memories will linger for a lifetime 🙂

I hope this post inspired you to visit Armenia and don’t forget to share and inspire others! 😀

Ladakh is located 11,000 feet above sea level in the state of Jammu & Kashmir in India. It is also known as The Roof of the World as it is geographically located on the Western Himalayas range; home to the highest mountain in the world.

The word Ladakh itself translates to the land of high mountain passes.

Despite the many warnings of the political instability and safety precautions, I still went anyway. Since when do I listen to these? 😛

I am so glad I went and I want to share the amazing experiences I had within my short two days trip.

I did not research into Ladakh so I did not have any expectation nor did I have any information of the city. Every step was a surprise; a pleasant one I must say.

From stumbling with an amazing driver as I began exploring to an amazing home-stay with a family that treated me in the best possible way.

Ladakh is a sparse and rugged city that has a very rustic and dramatic feel. I felt like I was in Tibet or Mongolia.

I was stunned with every little detail around me; the landscape of high mountains, the content expressions of very Mongolian/Tibetan looking locals, timid young monks, fresh air, the peaceful vibe, polite and compassionate locals, ancient monasteries and hilarious road signs every few kilometers. I could go on and on of how amazing Ladakh is.

Ladakhis are extremely humble and down to earth.

So because I did not have much time in Ladakh and with lack of preparation, I managed only to visit the below places. Check out the post for the list of things you should know before visiting Ladakh here and prep yourself accordingly! 😀

1. Khardung La

So, instead of acclimatizing for a day as advised by everyone, I went to the highest motorway road in the world straight out of the plane. It is 18,380 ft above sea level! I had to convince the driver that I can tolerate altitude sickness.

Boy was I wrong. As we drove higher through the narrow roads between the gorgeous Himalayan mountains, I felt sick; I couldn’t breathe, my heart was racing, nausea was taking over my mind, body and soul. The driver noticed that I was struggling and he asked if I am able to breath. Of course I can! I’m fine! Don’t worry about me.

Yea. Right 😛

I took these photos to remind myself of how I couldn’t even smile or hold the phone up to take a proper photo 😀

Nevertheless, I enjoyed the ride that lead to Khardung La despite the multiple stop along the way do to high snow level. The view is simply breathtaking.

2. Magnetic Hill

Although it lasted less than 5 minutes. It was a great to experience the phenomenon that defies the law of gravity.

3. Hemis Monastery

Hemis Monastery is the largest and most important monastery in Ladakh due to its role as the headquarter of a branch in Tibetan Buddhism. It was already closed when I got there so I did not get to explore much. Instead, a couple of little monks gave me some chips to feed the donkeys 😛

Growing up in Saudi, I don’t get exposed to animals. So whenever I see any animals, it excites the child in me 😀 I love love love interacting with animals.

4. Shey Monastery

Shey Monastery was the capital of Ladakh. Upon my visit, there was a ritual that has been going on for a couple of days. To be honest, I am not sure what was going on due to language barrier. However, the Ladakhis were so kind and invited me to join them for some hot cup of butter tea.

5. Shanti Stupa

Shanti Stupa is located on a hill top so you get a 360 view of the city when you get to this beautiful white dome.

6. Thikse Monastery

Another monastery located on a hilltop for a great view of the city. I visited Thikse Monastery close to dinner time and I was invited to enter the kitchen while the cook prepares food for the monks.

These shy monks were helping the kitchen by carrying gallons of water.

7. Spituk Gompa Monastery

I love the quotes on the walls of this monastery.

8. Organic Stores

Ladakh is all about organic products! Don’t forget to go to any organic stores and purchase loads of stuff! I personally bought dried fruits for my snacks during my trip and of course loads of Himalayan Salt to bring back home! 😀

How long should one stay?

It is recommended to stay at least 5 days or even weeks if you plan on going for an epic adventure because your body would need to rest for a day to acclimatize.

Who is it for?

It is for those looking for off the beaten track, curious to learn about the mix of culture and life in this underrated city.

Ladakh has so many beautiful untouched nature such as the Pangong lake, Tso Moriri and chasing snow leopards!

I met an amazing guy who runs an expedition company that helped me during my stay in Leh. You are guaranteed to have the best time in Ladakh!

10 years ago, no one would think of visiting Georgia or even heard of the country.

Today, Georgia is booming with tourism.

I went to Georgia via Soviet Union train from Armenia.

I arrived past midnight and took a taxi to the hostel. A taxi within the city should not cost more than 2USD.

I chose to stay in the old town so I could wander on foot. I was intensely traveling in Armenia for 5 days, so I took it pretty easy on my one day trip in Tbilisi which was initially planned for 3 days.

1. Breakfast – Machakhela restaurant caught my eyes as I walked around. Apparently it is a chain of traditional Georgian cuisine with a very reasonable price.

The portion is huge, great quality of food and the price was more than affordable. However, the restaurant gets very busy so it is not the best place to eat if you are in a rush.

Khachapuri

2. Botanical Garden – I met with several Couchsurfers and we decided to visit the Botanical Garden.

There is an easy trail towards Mother of Georgia which is pretty nice.

They also have a zipline that you could do in the Botanical Garden.

3. Aerial Tramway – After the hike up to Mother of Georgia in the Botanical Garden, there is an aerial tramway that will take you down by the Peace Bridge. It costs 1USD and it needs to be paid by a card that can be purchased by the ticket counter.

It’s a perfect ride for a 360 view of the city!

4. Turtle Lake – I wanted to visit a lake or anything close to nature and away from tourists since the city was invaded by tourism.

A local recommended Turtle Lake, unfortunately, it was also very touristy as it was only by the outskirts of the city. I couldn’t go far out from Tbilisi due to time constraint so I chilled for awhile in a coffee shop by the lake.

5. Sulfur Bath – The prices for Sulfur bath varies depending on the service it offers. As a budget traveler, I always go for the cheapest one possible.

I visited a public Georgian bath, it costs about 2USD. It was my first time to have a sulfur bath. I’ve tried drinking sulfur in Turkey before but never a bath.

I really enjoyed the bath especially after intense traveling. It was a nice way to refresh my body and relax.

What to expect: The sulfur scent is really intense even after taking a shower with fresh water. It is full nudity in a female only bath. Don’t forget to bring your own shampoo, soap and towel to avoid extra payments. They provide a locker to store all your belongings.

There are ladies inside the bath that can scrub or massage you for an extra fee. It’s 2 USD for a scrub and 4 USD for a massage.

It is important to be specific before starting the service as some of them might do a scrub and a massage in less than 20 minutes while it should last for at least 50 minutes.

6. Folk Dance & Dinner: Since I was taking it easy in Tbilisi, I decided to have a nice dinner and watch a cultural show. I was recommended to visit Metekhi Restaurant and the food, service and show was amazing.

It’s pretty crazy that a meal in a fine restaurant costs less than the little cup of fresh pomegranate juice in the streets. Why people pay 8.35USD for a small cup of pomegranate juice is beyond me 😀

7. Wander – Wander around the old town and immense in the old architecture that remained since the Soviet Union.

Holi also was known as the festival of colors is held on a yearly basis and it is most popular in the northern part of India. I chose to celebrate Holi in the pretty pink city; Jaipur.

Here is Hawa Mahal; probably the most iconic structure in Jaipur with it’s intricate facade in terracotta pink. In order to maintain the color scheme across the city, there is an enforced law on it.

The city is truly pretty in pink.

What is Holi Festival? It is a Hindu festival that has become global where other countries have followed the tradition of throwing colored powder to one another and celebrate the day filled with festivities, water guns and colors!

I was warned at least a dozen times to not celebrate Holi in the streets alone. Heck, since when do I listen to warnings without experiencing myself?! So I did anyway and it was a hell lot of fun!

Here are a few things you should know as a solo female when celebrating Holi.

1. Apply a generous amount of lotion or other types of moisturizer to your skin and hair unless you want to stay with a different patch of colors for a few days 😛

2. Go on the streets and celebrate with the locals! I did not feel in danger or harassed at any point of time. In fact, they were very polite by asking if they could put some color on my cheeks and forehead.

3. Tourist police will be surrounding the city so you don’t have to worry about safety.

4. You might want to skip having Lassi from the streets on Holi because it will probably be infused with bhaang or take it anyway? 😛

5. Hostels/Hotels usually arrange a private celebration for their guests for a small cost, so this is always fun to go to but don’t forget to experience the streets!

6. You will notice that there is barely any local female on the streets, I was told that this is because during Holi, men are allowed to throw colored powder at any body parts which they might take advantage and cross boundaries however, I did not encounter such behavior.

The next time you visit India during Holi, don’t be afraid to celebrate on the streets with the locals like a local 😀

Happy Holi!
